Orientation Letter

Pleasanton Stake Girls Camp
Monday, August 5th – Saturday, August 10th, 2013

Dear Parents & Girls,

Camp Ritchie is a wonderful opportunity to be away from the routines of home and enjoy the natural beauties that our Heavenly Father has created for us. Like all privileges, camp participation carries with it some important responsibilities. Please review together as parents and daughters the following expectations:

1. RESPECT: Be respectful of the lovely surroundings. Be appreciative of and courteous to the staff who give of their time and energies without compensation and who work hard to ensure your safety, well-being, and fun while at camp. Never tamper with anyone else's suitcase, sleeping bag, or private
belongings.

2. DRESS CODE: Dress at camp will be in keeping with Church standards of modesty and appropriateness. Appropriate dress for camp activities includes jeans or other long pants and T-shirts. Shorts, if worn, must come to the knee (as in EFY/BYU standards). Be advised that if shorts do not come to the knee, you will be asked to change. Leave flip flops, open-toed shoes, two-piece bathing suits (including tankinis), short shorts, and tank tops at home (no sleeveless shirts). You will be asked to wear shorts over your bathing suit if the leg is cut too high. All clothing and belongings should be labeled with your name.

3. ITEMS TO LEAVE AT HOME: There are to be NO cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, radios, etc., in camp except for those authorized by the camp director for camp use. This allows us to enjoy nature and each other’s company for the week. Also, please do not bring curling irons (including butane type), flat irons, or hair dryers, as the camp is run by a generator and the power is needed for electricity and refrigeration. Other items to leave at home include money, playing cards, and non-church-related reading material. If any of these items are found at camp or on the ride up, they will be collected, labeled, and stored in a safe place by the camp director until our return to the Stake Center.

4. FOOD: Girls are fed well at camp. Extra sweets and treats are abundant and it is not necessary to bring treats from home. Due to the problem with mice and other critters, any snack items you do decide to bring and keep in your cabins MUST be stored in a metal container with a metal lid.

5. MORAL CODE: All girls are expected to abide by Church standards while at camp. This includes keeping the Word of Wisdom (no drugs or alcohol), not using profanity or abusive language, and keeping high moral standards. If there is a problem, parents will be called and asked to drive to camp and take their daughter

6. NON-MEMBER GUESTS: Non-member friends are welcome at camp. They must be interviewed by your bishop and agree to participate in all camp activities and abide by the same rules and standards as the other girls, including full participation in the certification requirements, hiking, K.P. duties, etc. JCL or YCL guests must live within the Pleasanton Stake and attend pre-camp meetings.

7. MEDICATIONS: All prescription drugs in camp MUST be checked in with the nurse at the Stake Center before we leave for Camp Ritchie. They must be in their original prescription container with the label intact. Non-prescription medicines must also be bottled, labeled and identified and registered with the nurse upon arrival. Our most frequent medical problems are twisted ankles due to the lack of supportive footwear and asthma attacks due to the high altitude. Please make sure you have sturdy shoes and bring your inhaler if you have EVER suffered from asthma. Occasionally the higher elevation and rough terrain will reactivate an old problem. Also make sure you have an up-to-date tetanus shot.

8. LUGGAGE: Due to space, we ask that luggage be limited to one suitcase, and one bag containing a sleeping bag, pillow, and sleeping pad (the bunks are wood), and a backpack, if needed for certification. Each girl is responsible for carrying her own equipment to and from her cabin.

9. LOST AND FOUND: The camp is not responsible for lost items. Please do not bring valuable items or money to camp.

10. EQUIPMENT: We want you to be safe and comfortable while at camp. The key to this is having appropriate clothing and equipment. You will receive an equipment list at Back to Camp Night. Please take the time to go over the equipment list together. Make sure you have included all items and that all equipment is working and in good condition (if you need to borrow items, your Ward Camp Specialist can assist you with that). Make sure backpacks, if needed, fit properly and have padded shoulder pads and a good hip belt. Make sure shoes or boots for hikes are comfortable and have adequate support. Camp Ritchie is very rocky, and even around camp, supportive shoes are important.

11. TRANSPORTATION: All girls are expected to ride with designated leaders to and from camp. If you need to come to camp late or leave early, you must clear your plans with the Stake Camp Director before leaving for camp. Also, any visitors must get the same clearance.

12. MAIL: Mail call is an important part of camp. Girls love to receive letters while they are away from their families. Please do not sent letters or packages after the Tuesday we are at camp as they probably will not arrive before we leave. Please do not send mail that requires a signature for delivery or overnight mail, as the carriers will not bring packages or mail down into camp.
